An estimated 6,000 households in the City of Evansville don’t have bank accounts. Some families spend as much as $900 annually on cashier’s checks to pay their bills. In addition, Evansville residents spend an estimated $6 million each year on payday lending fees. A bank account is the first step to financial security, and provides the necessary tools to climb the economic ladder. With no safe way to access and save money, unbanked Evansville residents are particularly vulnerable in times of crisis or emergency, and lack the necessary tools to save and build assets.
